you can click here for more information on the pins as described in a letter from the original owner. a full transcript is in the alt text, as well September 11, 2023. Dear [redacted], Enclosed is the 1970s-1980s pin collection for which you made the successful [bid] at the recent WIM meeting. I am sending them to you attached to the fabric as in the photo in case you might be interested in mounting them rather than deconstructing that display (up to you, of course). There is also one more button not pictured. To the right is a photo of another small collection of pins. These are from my companion Liz and my 1987 trip to the Soviet Union. I am still a bit of a kid in enjoying collecting and putting together such things! These comments reflect the provenance of the buttons/pins you are receiving, to the extent known/remembered: — The two green ERA pins were ordered through an ad in MS magazine, itself a nascent icon of the times. — The small green pin with gold rim and trefoil is a 1940s Girl Scout pin (my mother’s in Faribault, MN). — The red and maize colored small rectangle is an early Emily's List logo. — The ERA 87 and its reference to the Constitution Bicentennial reflects the 200th anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution in 1787 (which took the Founding Fathers 11 years to craft from the time of the Declaration of Independence, communications re which are preserved in the Federalist Papers [=the original letters, not the contemporary right wing dark money organization Federalist Society] ). — the gold US Capitol melded with the female sign I believe came from Emily's List. — The red fist within the female sign on yellow background folks of that era will recognize as inspired by the Black Power fist...ergo Women’s Power. — White oval with Lady Liberty and flag...of that time when we were still hoping the ERA would be ratified, but I do not recall from where it came. — Pink triangle is a pin from US Holocaust Museum in Washington, referring to the pink triangle gay folks were forced to wear along with Star of David for Jews and their parallel journey to the gas chambers. — The rhinoceros with the red heart inside...no recall from where it came. You will find a 2” ‘bonus pin’ which was not in the photo: Fight Lesbian and Gay Oppression. It is from a ‘gay rights march’ on Washington in the middle 1980s. I hope you enjoy these, [redacted]! Kind regards, [redacted]
